This is the second short documentary on our work in Guina’ang and the bottle brick phenomenon that has been spreading throughout mountain province as a way to deal with the trash.
Illac and Alex, two guys from the Manila chapter of Architecture for Humanity, braved the rough roads to make the 14 hour journey to Bontoc and then to Guina’ang. They arrived in time to capture the market vendor women of Bontoc singing about sustainability. They got to see us building a giant snake from plastic bottle bricks in the Bontoc Plaza. Then, they then joined us as we went up to work on the site in Guina’ang.
When the finally got back to Manila, Alex and his team put together all their footage to create this magical 5 minute featurette. Illac then got the film up on the Architecture for Humanity’s International site for a crowd-funding drive. Alas, we got the link for the funding drive a little too late to share with you, but at least you can still see the movie.
The building of the Guina’ang Inspiration center from 3000 plastic bottle bricks continues to unfold. Schools, households, institutions and wet markets in the surrounding communities have rallied together to help make this many bricks. The process has resulted in the first ever reduction in the amount of garbage being dumped in the river and ignited an interest in bottle construction, raw foods, permaculture and alternatives to manufactured consumption.
